JM has written a personal letter to the Kickstarter Community and the World:
A Letter to the Fans, Friends and the Internet Omniverse
My name is JM Garcia, I’m the Author and Creator of the upcoming graphic novel series Tome: Azrian’s Fable and the action adventure and role-playing application game Tome: Arcknight Revelations a prequel to the Tome novel series. In October, I am going be a launching a Kickstarter to help me fund the completion of the novel and the development and production of the Tome App Game. Before I get into the specifics the project, I wanted to tell you a little about myself and my reasons for wanting to go forward with my dream of writing and creating an interactive and immersive reading experience.
When I was a young boy I was a problem child lost in a struggle to figure out who I was, because of it I often fought with my parents and siblings and had few friends and was alone most of the time. I wanted so badly to find a place where I belonged with people who understood what I was going through but I couldn’t find it at school or at home, so I took off for the woods behind my neighborhood where I’d spends hours and hours playing in a make believe world full of monsters and heroes ready to save the day. My toys would come alive in my make believe world, I’d give them names and back-stories and together we’d go on incredible adventures and then I’d go home and write down the events of our imaginative journeys. My imagination was my escape from every day life, fiction, movies and video games were a means for my imagination to grow even further and I found myself escaping to this fantastic place more and more everyday.
For a while things got so bad at home that I found myself displaced from my family, troubled by identity I knew I had to find a way to figure who I really was. When my schooling was complete I decided to search for myself and I happened upon a new city and state, Denver, Colorado. I rebuilt my relationship with my family and made new friends and even found a great job. I enjoyed management and being a leader but I wasn’t really happy, I knew I wanted to be more creative and do something with my life that felt worthwhile. I became so involved in my work that I forgot to have fun, I forgot about my imagination and I forgot what it was like to believe in myself. For my twenty-fifth birthday I was given a journal and a pen by a friend, who told me that I needed to start using my imagination again and put my ideas down for a book. My imagination stirred and the ideas started to flow from me, I knew that I could do it. What was meant to just be a means of self-expression grew into the fantastic realm of Tome, I had developed the story line, characters, technology and even the planets that the story spread across. I was so happy that I was able to write again and that I was using my imagination. While my younger brother Jon Garcia was in Afghanistan we’d stay up late playing video games on the internet and talking about my stories, so much so that I modeled the main character Azrian Regius of Tome: Azrian’s Fable after him, a stubborn, means well kid who wants to save everyone but doesn’t really know how. My career began to take its toll and I lost steam with my book and the work I had done on it, so I put Tome away and decided to focus on making money and working.
In August of 2012, my younger brother Jon was in a motorcycle accident that put him in a coma and ended his life on September 1st, 2012 sixteen days before my Mothers and my own birthday. Due to financial issues I wasn’t able to attend my baby brothers funeral, because of that and the overwhelming pain of his death I spiraled into a deep dark depression. During those three months I quit my job and it would be in December that I decided to pick up the pieces and go back to work. At this new job I was given the opportunity to visit Virginia, where my brother was laid to rest in a military graveyard. I was fortunate to be able to take some time while I was there to go to his grave. As I sat on his grave and touched the marker that had his name on it, as his head stone hadn’t arrive yet, I began to think of everything he left behind. It was overwhelming to think that he had a family and kids that loved him and it made me think about what I would leave behind, though I’m sure my own family and friends would miss me, I didn’t have kids or anything really to show for my life. At that moment I made a profound revelation, I wanted to leave something behind that the world would look at and remember me for. I wanted to share my stories and my vision of Tome with the world. I knew at that moment that I was going to work hard so I could see my dreams come true. I took a handful of dirt from his grave and when I got back to Denver I placed that dirt inside a gutted pocket watch, to remind me that I don’t have time to waste and that if I truly wanted to see my dreams come true I needed to work for it. Six months later I left my job and began working full time on my project, being an avid anime fan and video gamer I knew I had to work hard to create a world, no not a world, an Omniverse that people could believe in, that people could escape to as I had. I love the term Omniverse, I find it better to use than universe as my story has many layers, directions, characters, and dimensions than a singular universe could contain. I called on several of my talented and amazing friends to create a team of Artists, Designers and Business People to create my company, Tomeverse Ltd., a hub for me to create my fantastic stories and other projects. My goal is to have a seven novel book franchise that includes all kinds of app games, video games, card game, anime series, live action movies and various other media. After completing the first fifteen chapters of the book I knew I wasn’t going to be able to financially stay afloat while working on the book and I needed a means to support myself and still build a following for my creation. That’s when I found out about Kickstarter and the power that it had to help others power their dreams! My goal is to use Kickstarter to fund the development of an application game that gives the fans an opportunity to be apart of the story as its being written. The game focuses on events that transpired before the first novel, players and reader will be able to experience Tome and then go on to read the book, as they read the book certain “Power words” will be revealed that the readers and players will be able to take back to the game to access amazing power-ups, weapons, bonuses and limited edition characters. The game won’t end there though, as the realm of Tome is expanded through books, comic books, cartoons and other media fans will be able to download new planets, new characters, and the experience will just continue to grow for them. Not only will the Kickstarter be able to fund this, but it will also help me hire bright new stars in the world of game development, and also allow to work with amazing new artists . As part of our Kickstarter campaign we are designating a total of $10,000 in scholarships and an opportunity for someone of the Junior High School, High School and College Level to design and create our limited edition book cover for our Kickstarter promo book. This project will give people the chance to have an in depth look at how a franchise of epic proportions is created, they’ll be able to see video blogs of the process of hiring and working game developers, artists and editors. For those that participate in the Kickstarter they’ll have access to exclusive content, and personal blogs as I work to create a franchise that will hopefully one day compete with Star Wars, Harry Potter, Marvel and Disney. Tomeverse Ltd has partnered with Lange Graphics in Denver to fulfill our amazing prizes for our Kickstarter Campaign.
After eight years in the business management profession, I’d say I’m prepared for an undertaking of this proportion. I stand before the world asking it to believe in me as much as my friends and family do, I ask them to believe in my story as much as I do.
I want to share the places I escaped to when I was a boy, I want to introduce them to the heroes, villains and creatures that led me out of the darkness of the loss of my brother and the heartache I endured as a child. I humbly ask that you give me the opportunity to show you what I can do, so that I can in return give you all the fantastic and incredible experience of the Tomeverse.
